First Brisbane FEES Course

The inaugural Sydney Swallowing Diagnostics FEES course in Brisbane was held at the end of November 2025. Due to venue capacity, the course was limited to 12 participants and reached full registration quickly. Attendees included speech pathologists from both public and private sectors, representing services at varying stages of development. Some participants completed the training and immediately integrated into established FEES services, while others were preparing to launch new programs within their organisations.

The course took place at Speak and Swallow, a private Speech Pathology clinic in Burpengary East, and was supported by representatives from Xion, Storz, Atmos, and Tristal. Given the strong interest and positive feedback, the FEES course will now be offered as an annual event in Brisbane, in a larger setting to allow additional representatives and more participant attendance.

There are several ways to report findings from an instrumental swallowing assessment. When referring a client for a VFSS or FEES, it’s important to specify exactly what information you require. In acute or rehabilitation settings, you may need detailed biomechanical analysis to guide targeted therapeutic intervention. In community practice, however, the focus may be different.
When assessing swallowing, clinical bedside evaluations provide valuable clues, but they cannot reveal the true signs of swallowing difficulties. To understand what’s happening during a swallowing, Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is one of the most useful and accessible tools we have.
