FEES Competency

Learn from someone who has been doing FEES for 20 years

FEES competency training is available to clinicians who have previously completed a FEES knowledge and skills course. This training involves supervised clinical practice in performing nasendoscopy on both non‑dysphagic individuals and clients with dysphagia, as well as supervised FEES interpretation and report writing.

The required number of supervised observations will vary according to the time needed to demonstrate clinical competence. However, as a general guide, trainees typically complete approximately 10 FEES procedures with healthy or non‑dysphagic participants, 10 procedures with clients who present with dysphagia, and 10–15 supervised sessions focused on interpretation and reporting.

This training is delivered within your workplace using your own client caseload. Please consider whether this model is appropriate and feasible within your service context.

How does it work?
  1. First, attend a comprehensive training course to ensure that you are familiar with normal and abnormal anatomy, risk management, the FEES procedure, scoring and rating scales, therapeutic techniques, and interpretation and reporting. Ensure that there is a practical component where you can practice scoring, interpreting and reporting, and complete 10 supervised FEES procedures on healthy participants.
  2. Organise your equipment, which can be loaned if required.
  3. Organise a clinic day, with 10 clients for supervised observation.
  4. Supervision of interpretation and reporting can occur via telehealth.
  5. Once you are ready for competency sign off, arrange a competency assessment. This involves using a competency framework and includes the submission of all obtained evidence of knowledge, skill and experience to date.
  6. Training and competency assessment can be provided in pairs.
